i watch it from time to time, thought the peeps had a good "cause" but were just stupid people.

but then the last episode they showed a whale getting speared, then shot/killed, then butchered up.........

they killed 3-4 in a few hours

man, that was eye opening. and i knew the process but to watch it happen.

not as bad as the dude's beating the baby seals w/ bats. but they did kill a lil whale.....sad.

My son watches every episode so I've seen a few of them. I don't think I'd risk my life for a whale.

I watch it and think it's hilarious.

I think the people are stupid and probably deserve to have their boat sunk for ramming ships. If you want to play, you have to be willing to pay. I could care less about the whales or whaling. I would slaughter an animal, bleed it, cut it up into edible portions, cook it, and then eat it if butcher shops didn't do it for me. The only time I wouldn't want hunting is if you were doing it to the point of extinction. Japan isn't doing that, they are specifically targeting a species that isn't on the verge of extinction and they also quota hunt so the population isn't effected, but facts ruin the point of the show. Their lethal sampling of whales also helps the fish stock in the ocean.

I'll give you whales, but they're definitely fucking up the shark population.

Shark fins are NOT going to make your little asian dicks bigger. Just keep making lots of money so you don't have to worry about it.. (Japanese, not you trip).

I should record my husband's commentary while watching that show... it makes it all that much better  The lack of experience on their "sailors" has me surprised that they haven't completely sunk yet. Green Peace won't even claim these fools. Sure makes for good TV though. :panic:

This is another of those rare topics where we are in complete agreement, Trip. The Japanese are not breaking any laws but these goof balls keep attacking them. It's ridiculous. I wonder if the Japanese whalers are interested in hiring someone who is will to "shoot" back? I wish just once that they'd attack one of these ships and you heard a loud *bang* and see a hole magically appear in their hull!

As far as how sad it is to see a whale butchered... well, I doubt that it's any more gruesome than the fate of the cow that sacrificed his life so I could eat at Checkers a minute ago.

Personally, I'd love to see a bunch of kooks go jump in the water to stop people from hunting sharks!

I mean, geeez - the ships all say RESEARCH on the side of them. What more proof do we need?? There is the right way to go about this, and there is the wrong way. Trying to take on a ship with a personal water craft while they are firing water cannons at you in freezing waters is the WRONG way.

If they were smart they'd find a better way to sabotage the ships.

All ships need cooling water for its equipment. All sea water suction occurs from a few common areas. If they could drop something in the water that would sink a bit and be sucked up, they may be onto something..

Also forgot to mention that if anything is tangled in your prop, its a good idea to remove it ASAP.

Now, if some ropes with heavy weights got wrapped around it, the hull would take a beating and be potentially compromised.

They have thought of that - and even attempted it. The bummer for them, the Japanese crews thought of it too. And, the ship the Whale War idiots are on isn't rated for the cold temps. So, they are more at risk than the whalers themselves.

Exactly, if they aren't happy with the way international law is written, they should take it up with the U.N. All I know is that if a bunch of nut jobs attacked my ship I'd better not have so much as a rock on it! I think that a bunch of water balloons filled with whale blood/guts would do nicely!

I could come up with ideas all day...

Ram the prop with some kind of extension.. That could knock the stern seals loose and flood em.

2 small craft with a chain between em. Weight in the middle of the chain. Come up behind and drag it until you catch the prop or a-frame and let it go...

Boats are so vulnerable, anybody with half a brain could sabotage one.

I don't support a needless slaughter of animals.

If you do any research on whale meat, everything leads to most of it going to waste. And the hunt is essentially a traditional thing that keeps some fisherman employed. Somewhat like our Canadian seal hunt..

This reminds me of the nut jobs that spiked a bunch of trees so loggers would get injured if they cut them down or the people who oil corners at the Gap because they don't like us speeding down 129.

The Japanese whalers have found a "loophole" in the law. Get together and change the law but to attack and potentially injure or even kill these sailors who are just trying to make a living... IDK maybe this is another case where I'm stupid/crazy/ an idiot/ etc but I don't get it. This would be like someone against deer hunting setting up booby traps on state land.

Although I am sure that they are working hard to eliminate even this small amount of whale hunting. I'm sorry but to me hunting is hunting. Why does a whale have a greater right to life than a deer? found this while i was looking around:

Canada

Nowadays, Canadian whaling is carried out by various Inuit groups around the country in small numbers and is managed by the Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The meat obtained from this whaling is commercially sold through shops and supermarkets. This meat is typically not available in southern metropolitan centers such as Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal but is more available in northern communities where whale meat is a component of the traditional diet. There is considerable consternation amongst whale hunters and conservationists about the hunt. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society says "Canada has pursued a policy of marine mammal management which appears to be more to do with political expediency rather than conservation."

Canada left the IWC in 1982 and as such is not bound by the moratorium on whaling.

Our whaling literally occurs in a boat big enoug for 4 or 5 people. And the carcass is floated beside the dinghy until it can be hauled ashore.

Also, our guys are allowed so many strikes. If they're allowed 3 strikes, and they hit a whale and it dives, there goes a strike. You now have 2 more...

OK-ENOUGH of the "whale wars". Do you realize that EVERY Naval vessel out there throws massive quantities of BS overboard ? Where's the outrage about that? A single Aircraft carrier has over 5000 assholes on it wasting all sorts of BS.As soon as you reach 13 miles of the coast-dump everything overboard. I spent 13 years in the USN and am ashamed at all the harmful stuff we dumped over the side.

America needs to clean up its act before we can go after others.

Funny you should mention what the navy does.

We treat all of our sewage before it is dumped, regardless of where we are in coastal waters.

We also melt down and store all plastic.

We pulp all paper and send it over the side. And all glass and metal are broken down into tiny pieces using a shredder before we put it in the ocean.

And food and such is ground up and used to feed the fishes.

We actually use your navy as an example of what not to do.

We can technically dump straight oil over the side if its an operational requirement. But, I think we'd be pretty much a ball of flames before that would happen.

Slice.. Fuel is run through coalescers. It seperates the water from the fuel.

It has to be run through these coalescers before it is allowed to be run in the engines.

So, if they have to run it through a water seperator before it goes to where it needs to be. Why dump it?

And, if water got into your JP5, (jet propellant 5) you have some serious issues.

Like a compromised tank..

I could go on all day on why fuel mixed with water wouldn't be dumped.

But, he may have just had a dumb ass co..

Tmall
08-17-2009, 09:25 PM

So, unless it was detected in the fueling, which they stop immediately when they take fuel samples, how could water and fuel emulsify before it was caught?

Jp 5 is a fuel with a lower flash point than diesel.

We can mix it into our diesel, but we can't mix diesel in with it.

Its basically clean jet fuel.
It has tighter restrictions than regular fuel. We run our through the filters for 4 hours every single day, to ensure our birds don't fall out of the sky.

Well, it's worth a lot of money right?

Research, duh.

I can't stand the show, but mainly because of the shitty ass captain. He always plays it so it's not his fault if shit goes wrong. For example people wanted to do some weird mission but the people who were going to do the mission were worried about it. The captain basically said "Decide yourselves" but then brow beat them into doing it. Your a fucking captain, you make the god damn call.

For the rest of the crew. Nothing but a bunch of whiney ass rich kids who are wanting to score some sweet sweet hippy bush poontang..

Whales suck anyways. Save dolphins because dolphins are much cooler and smarter than whales.

Oh yea? Who? Just kidding! Yea I also know a guy who lost his spleen from a farmer running a wire trap because they were riding dirt bikes down his access road as a short cut to his property. According to my friend the guy never once said anything to him or his Dad about it. In fact, his Dad had always considered them friends.:idk:

Don't know anything about their teeth but the intelligence, speed, and agility come from the dolphin side. Which is why Orcas (their scientific name means "Bringer of Death") are kings of the ocean. Giant Squids, Great Whites, etc generally do not fuck with a full grown Orca.

We lucked into a super pod. There must have been 50 orca.

We just shit off the boat and drifted while they swam around us.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the coolest thing I have ever experienced.

Even got to see a whale boner! the tour guide says, "kinda humbling eh guys?" I told him, speak for yourself.

And to top it all off, while we're zooming back in a 400hp rhib, 4 cf 18s fly over us in formation.

One of the biggest opponents to whale hunting is the whale watching industry. They don't care about population numbers or if whale hunting will have an impact on the population. All they care about is the $$$ that comes in from whale watching because it will drive whales away from easy hunting areas.

Ok...Break out your tin-foil, I have a theory...

You have a boat that is designed to do one thing only, race around the world on french fry grease. It costs a shit ton to insure and maintain, and people aren't exactly lining up these days, to sponsor round the world motorboat races that have effectively 9 spectators total.

What to do?

"Loan" it to Sea Shepard, and declare the loan as a tax write off.

Hint around that if you "Have a little accident", your insurance will cover it.

Act really bummed out when Sea Shepard people crash the fucking thing into a boat made out of shit boats should be made out of (that would steel, and lots of it).

Blame it on the Japs. (It worked for Pearl Harbor, it will work now).

Lets sum up;

Japs are bad.
2.5 mil in insurance money.
Tax write off for use of an asset.
Free press for Whale humpers.

It's fucking perfect.

He didn't loan it, he drove it into the Jap Whaler. The original guy who did all the round world trips was at the helm when it went down. It wasn't a moron hippy with no sea experience, it was the main guy from the beginning of Earthrace who sunk it.

Trust me, my accountant could figure out a way to write off my time, and the boat's time. Sea Shepherd is a 501(c)(3) charity.

All the better that the original skipper was at the helm. It's he said, Wii said, over who hit who.

This is kind of what I was thinking too. I didn't know that the guy who built it was at the helm, but it really doesn't change anything. The guy who built it did so with some of his money, but also a lot of donations. That gives me the impression that he isn't some Branson/Fossett billionaire with a hard-on for boats instead of balloons.

He is sitting on this boat that, as you said, is a fucking money pit. Hell, chicks don't even like it because it smells like the kitchen of a bad McDonald's and doesn't have a sunpad. He is also a certifiable tree hugger/animal nut/publicity hound so why not use the boat to help some whale-fuckers who happen to have a TV show. They screwed around for a few months dragging lines trying to foul whaler's props, but that didn't work.

Now he is sitting on this money pit boat and he is picking up dipshit by osmosis from the "Whale Wars" idiots, and failing at what he is trying to accomplish in front of a national audience on TV. Why not get the hell out of the show and get some cash in the process. The best way to convert a bunch of carbon fiber in to cash is with insurance. He gets the side benefits of additional publicity and helping the "Whale Wars" idiots.

It doesn't help that it looks like he gives it some gas (or biodiesel for fucks sake) right before the whaler gets to him.

I read an article on the boat and as said before it was doomed from the beginning with TONS of problems when they originally built it, raced it, retrofitted it then sunk it. I think the whole premise of the whale wars thing is that they are hunting in certain areas that are considered 'wildlife reserves' or whatever they call them in the ocean.

These guys are a bunch of idiots IMO. If some TV network would give me money I would totally make my own whale wars show but have a fleet of fastboats with pneumatic guns loaded with ball bearings that go after the 'activists'. That would be entertainment.

Bethune boarded the Shōnan Maru 2 on February 15, 2010, claiming to be conducting a citizen's arrest on her captain for what he said was the attempted murder of him and his crew, and to present a $3 million demand for his lost boat.[52] He was detained by the ship's crew and taken to Japan, where he was arrested by the Japanese Coast Guard on March 12 on charges of trespassing.[53][54][55] On April 2, 2010, Bethune was indicted on five charges; trespassing, assault, illegal possession of a knife, destruction of property and obstruction of business.[56] He is being held without bond in a maximum security prison.[57][58]

GOOD!!! They have been asking for it for years. I've said it before, you will only take so much before you start hitting back. All that crying by the captain, maybe he should have thought about that before he put his "multi-million" boat in their way. I would have hit them a long time ago. You sure? I could have swore that I heard someone on the Steve Irwin exclaim that if they didn't find the Jap fleet as many as 50 or 60 whales would be murdered... It's one of the things that puzzled me the most about this show. Why all the drama over such a small number of whales.:idk:

Okay, they(tree huggers) say that 25,000 whales have been killed in over 34 years...but that's total world wide. Not just the Japanese. BTW did you know that they are against tuna fishing as well and have a campaign that is trying to put a stop to that as well? Son, I really like my tuna! WTF? Why don't they go bother those Deadliest Catch guys? I don't like crab all that much. In fact, what a great show, Whale Wars vs Deadliest Catch! I have a feeling the Sea Shepherd guys would get their butts kicked...

From what I understand they kill a lot more than 50 whales a year, but I still agree with you. There are lots of types of animals I wish weren't killed, but there are also plenty of animals I eat that others wish weren't killed. What makes my preference that the Japanese not kill whales to eat any more valid than a Hindu's preference that cows not be killed to feed me?

We aren't looking at the extinction of cows anytime soon. Whales, on the other hand, are being hunted out of existence.

I thought that they have a "quota" or limit...:idk: Anyway, we kill millions of animals per year for food, clothing, convenience, etc but he no fair killing a few whales.:idk:

The quota they usually refer to is on whales that are on an endangered list. Most of the whales they are killing are not on that list.

Frankly, I'm surprised no one has been killed on that untrained, unlicensed crew...

no, it's somewhere like 600-1000. They have several quotas for different species. They can take a bunch of Minke whales because they are like the rabbits of the whale population and aren't in that much danger of extinction.

As Trip said the majority of whales they kill (Minke) are nowhere near extinction, or even endangered (population estimates usually start at the mid hundreds of thousands and go up from there). For the species more at risk the Japanese limit themselves to 50 each year out of estimated populations in the tens of thousands. I guess it comes down to what a person's objection is. If it is a moral objection, tough shit. If it is an environmental/species protection issue then the Minke killings should be acceptable.

The whales of those other species, that they "only take in limited numbers", are smaller and smaller each year. That means a dwindling population, that will eventually be unsustainable.

Not only have I not seen any research willing to state populations of fin or humpbacks year over year, most of the research I have seen specifically states that the numbers they give are too inaccurate to suggest population trends. I'd be interested to see any research you have come across to the contrary though.

Who says it's a "sanctuary" besides the whale people? Their tactics are enough to get themselves killed if I were on one of the other boats. They throw glass bottles at the Japanese ships and that alone would cause me to take action. Plus can't the acid in the bottles blind someone? The guys on these ships are just working fishermen no different than the Deadliest Catch guys. The japs are hunting whales within their quota and the law as it stands... I still don't see why whales have anymore right to live and not be eaten than crabs, lobsters, or any other animal?

Whales, dolphins, porpoises, orcas... They matter because, next to us, they're the most intelligent thing on the planet. They may be the closest thing to an intelligent alien species that we'll ever meet. They matter because any time that we bring another species to the brink of extinction, we're setting ourselves up for the same thing.

That "eliminating the demand" thing; so how's that working for you? Oh, right, it's made you the country with the highest percentage of its population in prison, in the developed world. Most of what is obtained from whales, can be produced for no greater cost artificially. Sometimes things have to be made to happen.

The problem there is you classified whales with dolphins. Dolphins are extremely smart creatures. I don't believe whales are all that smart. They seem to be a step above a whale shark but they need air. I haven't seen whales exhibit any intelligent actions above a bird. A monkey would for sure be much smarter than a whale.

The only thing that saves the whales from being fished like tuna is that people mistake whales for a dolphin. People actually think Shamu and Willy are whales. I can't remember the last time I saw a whale do tricks.

There are some birds near my place that communicate all fucking day long. I'm devoting a large portion of my brain to figuring out how I can unload a 10ga in the middle of a city and not draw attention.

They may also be smart but they seem so boring and remind me more of a herd animal than an independent animal. Maybe when we hear stories of a whale saving a diver from sharks or raping some beach goers I'll view them close to the human species.

I'm not going to deny though that they are cool animals.

No, no, no... I'm not saying put them in jail, the japs and consumers aren't doing anything illegal that I can see. If they were then the big, bad Australian fleet would be out there stopping them and the tree highers could be out focusing on their other great crusade which is tuna fishing... I'm saying that they should focus on the people that buy whale products and try and convince them to stop through education about alternative products/meat.

The same thing goes for drugs...as long as people still make excuses for their use... Hey why don't those whale guys take all that money and open stores that sell cheaper alternative products in the markets that are using whales...

If you're talking about human-style intelligence then yes, we look to things like convolutions in the brain. If we're talking about things like ability to process sensory information, communication, and problem solving skills, then that is far less of an issue.

Unfortunately whales don't possess GPS, SONAR, and projectile weapons. They also have to come up for air, once in a while.

Did you really just say whales don't have sonar?

You're right; that was stupid.

I didn't say anything because I'm not sure that all whales use sonar...are we sure this isn't another case of orca, dolphin, porpoise confusion?:idk:

Nope, many species of whale use echolocation, via whalesong.

z06boy
08-17-2010, 09:35 AM
Exactly!!! They live in a constant state of surprise...

"I couldn't believe it when the jap boat hit us just because we jumped out in front of it..."

" OMG they threw something back at us..."

"What do you mean our boat burns fuel and we need water?"

"Um I guess you can't tie up three boats with one rope during a storm and expect them to still be there in the morning."

If you like over dramatized semi dangerous situations and dumb stares... the crews are famous for them, you'll like this show.

Watch the South Park parody first, to get some perspective.

 I'll at least check the show out...oh I'll definitely have to catch the South Park parody for sure !!

saw the first episode the other night. was too funny to turn the channel.

guy shooting bottles of paint out of a converted spud gun that runs on compressed air, and some idiot shooting flares at boats.

Would like to know what the Japanese people on the whaling boats have to say about these idiots trying to stop them from doing nothing illegal.

Bout a week ago a fly got in the house, living room was dark except for the tv. My cat sits down about five feet back from the set and sat perfectly still except for his ears which were independantly whipping around tracking the little bugger. After about five minutes the fly got too close and max swatted it into his right paw and popped it in his mouth. Amazing to watch

Right? I was like, "what must these Japanese sailors be thinking?". The best part was after they shot BOTTLES of paint at the Jap ship, they freaked out when the Japs came out with their own compressed air "weapon"... I guess it's okay for them to chuck/shoot stuff at the Japs but not vise-versa..:idk: One of the guys on the speed raft actually complained about the Japs shooting at them during their "attack" on the Japanese ship. What a bunch of pansies!

As opposed to you with the personality development holes one could drive a double decker bus through and the predictable as shit argument pattern you use. You know? I. Think you may be somewhat autistic. You should get that tested

 It's epic!!! In the last couple shows, they have the captain purposefully aiming his ship at the Jap factory ship and narrowly missing it BUT if the Jap ships get within a 100 yards, it's all "the Japanese are getting more aggressive!!!" Oh no! He played chicken with a Jap boat recently... if the boat which was much larger than his (they made sure to point out...several times) had hit the tree huggers, it would have been ALL the Japanese whaler's fault for sure! Those dirty bastards out trying to make a living and what not... I wonder how much ecological impact acid and paint have on the environment when you throw them in the water on purpose... not to mention all the fuel and oil they are using.:idk:

Papa_Complex

That would be a great way for the eco-idiots to end up in prison. The bigger boat generally has right-of-way ;)

Don't forget emissions from potentially saved whales. Ill bet those things produce epic amounts of carbon dioxide and methane
