Um I only read the first page but 2 out of 3 said they'd take the Ducati and the one guy who took the Buell did so because it was cheap...

Maybe the gold frame is questionable, but the rest of it is spot on IMO. 2-3 years ago it was even better with a checkered flag design on the tank.

Just was addressing your point about comparisons. I thought it was favorable.
One guy didn't like the Buell because he said it looked "cheap". The other guy said he'd take the Ducati because, "well, it's a Ducati".
I guess it's a little too little too late.
All in all, though, both the 1125R and 1125CR stacked up favorably against the competition.

To me it looks like a box of legos from 6 different kits blew up and this is what fused together at ground zero.

God Dammit! I have ridden one and guess what? The sky didn't part, the fucking angels didn't sing, and I didn't leave a huge dent in the tank from a boner!!! All I wanted was to get off that uncomfortable, rattling, shaking, slow, non-braking motherfucker!!! If they are so great, why don't you own one? Oh and please don't give me that poor shit because you can probably trade even up for your bike right now.
It's amazing... forget the many, many recalls... forget the many failures, forget the numbers, forget the absolutely dismal race results, forget all of the comparisons- shit when was the last time Buell allowed one of his babies to be compared against a similarly designed bike like the Tuono, Monster, SV1000, FZ1, etc? When has his precious creation ever compared favorably against a similarly configured and sized bike?:idk: What is up with all of the excuses? His original stated goal was to take on the other manufacturers on EQUAL terms, when did that happen? It didn't and he failed to complete his mission statement. Period. Were they great bikes? Sure considering what they were and where they came from, they were great bikes but they definitely weren't "world beaters" in any sense of the words. Oh and considering that he had the backing of one of the largest motorcycle companies in the world maybe we should quit treating him like this "small visionary that took on the big boys alone".
So you're thinking about getting one ? :bigrofl:

Gotta admit, that article is impressive. That 1125R is an ugly sumbitch, but the CR actually looks normal and I could see considering it as a DD. Wonder how it would compare to last season's winner, the Speed Triple, or the new Monster.
I gotta call BS on this statement. The Tuono is nowhere near comparable to the SV1000, Monster, or FZ1.
Why not? I would put it in the same market as the SV and definitely the Monster. Not so much the FZ1 though.
There's always people who are going to be brand fanatics. They're willing to overlook pervasive flaws in order to stick with their belief that the brand they've invested in is the best. They're usually the ones with a company sticker on the back of their car/truck. Doesn't matter if it's "Ford", "Ducati" or "Buell", it's all the same mindset.

As far as my bike, I fully understand I could have a fuel pump failure or a final drive failure (major issues with this bike.) I know it's far from perfect and will fully admit it. I don't think it's a bike for everyone and wouldn't recommend it unless I knew it was something you were looking for.

Huh? Dude, I'm just pulling examples of naked/semi-naked bikes. I'm definitely not trying to start a new argument about some other basically boutique bike. Who cares?:idk: Compare the Buell to any bike you want with a 1125+ motor and draw your own conclusions. I picked all bikes with less cc's off the top of my head in the middle of the night. The comparison FB posted was with the Tuono, 1125CR and the Ducati Streetfighter. Personally, I honestly believe that a SV1000 would take the Buell in a straight up contest with similar mods but that's just me being a Suzuki fan boy!

One problem, I don't believe it was HD that did it. It's the public that did it. It's the biker gangs and the publics vision of them. The whole outlaw perception. HD played off that. Recent HD ads, I would say have for the most part been targeting lame middle age people. The bike sold itself more than HD sold it.
Plus I don't believe a fanboy perception is a good image. It's means no matter if the product is great or the worst thing ever, you are a stupid sheep and will buy it anyway.

Hey I've been guilty of drinking HD kool-aid myself! I literally waited months for the bike and it broke down within a couple hundred miles and I accepted that as just part of the deal...:idk: I'm not sure if it was genius marketing by Harley or not but it has always amazed me that people were willing to pay top dollar, almost double at times, for a bike that you KNEW was going to break down, require 3 or 4 times the maintenance, have less performance in every category, almost REQUIRE aftermarket parts, and to top it off-you would have to wait for up to 2 years to get it!!! I know that things have changed but that was the deal for about a decade!!!
BTW someone mentioned the fact that Jap bikes cost almost the same as HD... The Japanese MFGrs have two choices either pay the huge tariffs or build their bikes using over-priced American labor. Either way, it was going to impact the price of a bike. If they could build their bikes overseas and ship them here without tariff, we'd be able to buy GSXR1000s for $8,000!

Before I actually worked a sales floor at an HD dealer, I had a pretty negative outlook on Harleys. They were unreliable. They leaked oil. You had to carry a tool box with you just to keep them running. The usual.
The latest offerings by HD are VERY high quality good running bikes. I was surprised how well put together and dependable they are.
They are on par with anything out there as far as quality.
I can even justify the price to a degree. There is NOTHING that is plastic on any Harley. Everything is either painted metal or cast. They weigh 900+ pounds for a reason.
If you are paying by the pound, the price is in line with their metric competitors.

That story has been going around. Nothing further has been reported.
There is a concerted effort going on to track down the suppliers of every component of what makes up a Buell, though. Part of the challenge, if HD is unwilling to help, is going to be in replicating the parts. It's much cheaper to get it going if the original supplier with the original specs is able just to gin out more parts. It's much harder to reverse engineer the parts and have them produced by a new supplyer.

ok, so I just stumbled upon this thread now. Wow, being out of the loop sucks!!!!
Most things I'd say have already been said, but I have a couple.
We know that Buell needed HD's money to "spread the word" etc and for the dealership networks. I also feel that those same dealership networks are the major downfall of the Buell brand. I have never in my life walked into a HD/Buell dealership and had anyone pay me any attention after I mentioned that I was interested in Buell. I found that the sales, parts, and service staff were all very ill informed and uneducated about the brand in general, as well as specific models. I have even been pushed toward various HD models when asking about a Buell model. All this does not lead to good sales.
Further, very few dealers carried a selection of Buells EVER.
To walk in and see a 1125, a XB12R and a Ully was a miracle in itself. My dealership even said they would only order a Buell if someone was commited to it. The first year of the 1125, they only got in 5... 3 they sold to other dealerships. the 2 others, one I bought, and the other was the showroom model for awhile, but they didn't bring it out until I showed interest in it and wanted to see one before I bought.
FT BSTRD... you really work for a rarity in the HD world. I have heard many good things about your dealership, and I hope they continue.
I love my 1125, and I'm glad I got it when I did, retail price or no. It was over 10K of wonderful riding that I never would have gotten without it.
It is the anny edition as well... so it *may* at some day be a collector. But I tell you, it will not be a collector like some of these old muscle cars you see with low low original miles. I bought this bike to ride, Erik designed this bike for me to ride, so that's what I'll do.

traded it in, it had 33k miles and was getting ready to be serviced in the future, with the deal buell offered i was silly not to take it, by the time i paid someone to check the valves and check out the clutch, prolly replace the some parts i would be almost buying the buell, and i would of still had an 9 year old bike with 33k miles

The XB9R was produced up until the 2009 Model Year.
The 9 motor is really one of the best motors produced by Buell. It didn't have the low end grunt of the stroked 12 motor (same bore longer stroke), but it was MUCH smoother.
The only new bikes coming with the 9 motor are the SX. The City X (XB9SX) is a fantastic commuter/urban bike. Good low end torque, smooth engine, low fuell consumption (55-60MPG).
I have three XB9SX bikes waiting. Two Red, one Blue.

You can do a big bore kit for them and get very good power and torque out of these motors.

The only proof I can find is service manuals, and they only go as far as 2007.
I honestly did think they only did a small run of them and discontinued it not long after the 12. I stand corrected.

Not the frame's fault. It was the fact that an Austrian engine doesn't like it when you give it SAE fuel tables.
Current models and 2008s with corrected fuel maps don't boil gas.

I get about 40 mpg average... which means I could get 200 miles on it if I wanted to run it almost empty. I fill up between 150 and 180 miles just cause.

I forgot that the R and CR have different faces. Can you bash off the ugly R face with a Lousville Slugger and then put on a CR face?
Also, is the muffler's secondary operation a skid plate or flotation device?
Wish there was a Buell dealer here. If I saw a CR for $5k, I'd hump it all the way home.

Have you actually sat on the CR? I don't know about you, but I find feeling like you're leaning over the front wheel very disconcerting.
The R's geometry isn't really different but that 'ugly face' as you call it (:nono: ) keeps you from feeling like you're going to go over the nose if you get on the brakes.

High bar kit FTW.

12-14-2009, 06:05 PM
The Cafe Racer bars were marketing hype and were a not toward the British cafe racer scene and allowed them to call it a "CR".
They were mostly unpopular, and as a result the vast majority of new CR owners opted for the high bar kit.
Buell could have done what most manufacturers would have, continue to sell the bike with an unpopular stock set-up AND sell the desired upgrade for additional mark-up.
Instead, Buell was slated to have all of the 2010 CRs equipped with the high bar and sell the cafe racer bars as an "option".
I agree, though, that the CR bars sucked and put the rider in completely the wrong position for a naked street fighter.
