if it's in raw my only 2 suggestions would be:

1. Lighten up the foreground a tad and get rid of the shadow on the left side of the dog (looking at him in the pic - technically right side of dog if you were standing behind him)

2. The 2 canoes are perfect - the third one to the left or whatever the fuck that is needs to be cloned out - it detracts from an otherwise awesome picture

Not sure you wanted it but that would be my attempt at editing if I was to edit that photo.

You can take a quality picture with nearly any camera. You just have to know what you're doing. Mainly, holding still. Shitty shots are usually caused my people shaking like Michael J. Fox.

I have steady hands! When I take face pics they come out really harsh and unflattering esp when I use the flash. Its fine in outdoor lighting though . And its really blurry in low lighting. Not sure if the settings can be adjusted but I usually just set it to an auto mode. My pictures always came out nice with film though.

Consumer cameras, especially compacts, usually have too much sharpening applied to pictures by default. This highlights every skin flaw and imperfection, which especially women tend not to like in shots of themselves. With a man, depending upon his general appearance, such flaws tend to add 'character.'

Some cameras allow you to alter the default settings, so in-camera sharpening can be reduced. There are a variety of software 'filters' available that can be used to edit pictures, after the fact, and smooth skin tones. "Portraiture" is one of them: http://www.imagenomic.com/pt.aspx

Or you can just end up with harsh shadows, when using flash. It's rare for professional photographers to use just one flash, when shooting portraits. Three is pretty much the minimum, plus reflectors, umbrellas, and diffusers.

I rarely use flash. Natural light FTW...even in TV when I can get away with it. That's b/c of what Papa said...harsh shadows.

The camera makes a HUGE difference... I've had a few over the years that consistently gave me shitty pictures... So far, my Canon SD1100 has given me consistently top quality pictures (for a point and shoot)... I did a LOT of research when buying that thing and it was a fantastic purchase.

I have a new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 on the way (should be here Monday)... got it because it seems to be the best all around waterproof/rugged camera on the market today, but from what I gather the ol' Canon will probably still take better pictures.

This. I was really reticent to take a lighting class, but I did learn a lot about how to help reduce the harsh shadows when you have specular sunlight. Plus I'm a wee bit lazy and cheap.. lugging around a strobe kit (or even constant lighting), plus reflectors, soft boxes/umbrellas, etc., ad nauseum, just seems too much for my particular style (I tend to prefer candid shots in most cases).

My Brigade CSM's picture always gives me the biggest twitch.. I can tell they used only one tungsten lamp (the pic looks yellow, so they didn't adjust the white balance) and no fill lighting (either via another lamp or a reflector). He's already pretty stern looking, but the harsh side-lighting just makes it even worse.

Usually, in bright sunlight, all that you really need is a little fill flash. For example I used fill in this shot where the subject was in bright sunlight, but the sky behind was heavy clouds.

need off camera flash or bounce flash or something.. i go back and forth between fill flash and no flash.. just depends.. lighting is very tricky..

AHHHH you guys are making my brain hurt. Thanks OSP I will look into the the canon. I will hit you guys up for more info prob in a couple of weeks after finals are over and I have some breathing room, I hope. If not, I will definately be looking to get something end of august when school is done and I have a life again.

Do those big ass cameras take better pics? The ones that look really touristy? I saw some on the walmart site for about $300. I rather have a small camera just for portability but if the bigger ones are better then I would consider those too.

You probably mean a DSLR. And yes they do take better pictures. But it probably wasn't a SLR you saw for 300...just a big point and shoot.

You probably mean a DSLR. And yes they do take better pictures. But it probably wasn't a SLR you saw for 300...just a big point and shoot.

yeah the SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera's and Digital SLR(DSLR) are the ones you can swap out the lens on. (SLR shoots film, DSLR shoot digitally) usually they run about 500+. They do take better photos, as the sensor is bigger, they may be less mp (mega pixles) than a point and shoot or p/s (my Nikon D300 is only 12mp, sony makes a 14mp p/s)

if you're looking at DSLRs don't get too caught up on the mega pixles. find one, and try it out... they can be much more complicated than a p/s and if you're just shooting in auto, it's hard to justify the price and inconvenience of lugging it around.

another thing you can look at is something like the Olympus Pen, or the Panasonic Luminx lines... they take great quality photos, offer you the chance for full adjustment (not always auto) and change of lens.

above all... remember it's like bikes... it's the rider not the bike... though a good bike can make the rider better... it's still 80+% rider

Better photographers take better pictures. It's sort of like how most sportbike riders don't come anywhere near the limits of what their bikes can do ;)

A DSLR gives you more possibilities, but it doesn't take better pictures.

I've seen excellent landscape pictures that were taken by professional photographers, with pocket cameras, and sold for a pretty penny.

This is expensive, compared to a pocket camera, but it gives you DSLR flexibility in something not much bigger than a pocket camera.

Hoping to get a little buddy soon, going through a rescue org is a pain in the ass, been trying to get someone to come out and do the house interview for about 2 weeks. You would think they would actually want to give animals homes instead of dragging it out.

Craigslist.

sucks for what we want, the dog (mini goldendoodle) my wife wants doesn't go for less than $1000 and I am not paying that for a designer dog aka expensive mutt that comes from a puppy mill.

We found this girl from a rescue, just have to get them out to our house for the interview.

Unless you have a lot of time, I dunno that I'd be considering a collie... I had a friend growing up who had collies and they were great dogs - super smart and willing to please... however, they were fucking NUTS with energy.

This is a sheltie, they are not built as well to run, they actually advise against running with them for a prolonged time, but you do need to "work" them everyday.

It doesn't have to be straight running/jogging.
Spend a little of the designer dog money you saved at Home Depot and build some agility obstacles. Shelties should be great at that, and it gives them mental stimulation as well as exercise.

That's actually my plan, I have always wanted to try to do agility type stuff. We trained our stupid Lhasas to do all kinds of tricks and they weren't the smartest dogs. Always wanted a really intelligent dog.

Nope never hunted with any of them. Riley is actually gonna be going in soon to take his CGC (canine good citizens) test and once he gets his certificate, going to take the therapy dog test to see about becoming a certified therapy dog. We'll see!

Watched a few training vids. They start off just running the gates to someone with a ball. Then they learn running the gates once to bring a ball to someone. Then I think they just running to get a ball off that thing and bring back. Then you add the gates.

We got a puppy, a sheltie. We wanted to rescue, but this is just about as close as a rescue as you can get without rescuing.

We got her from someone on craigslist for a rehome fee with a sob story about transferring out of state. She has fleas, no papers, and a few other things. Going to get her a vet this week hopefully. Immediately had her checked for a microchip to make sure she wasn't stolen. She isn't leash trained or crate trained. She is surprisingly house trained though and has no accidents so far. She is as sweet as can be, but a very shy. Loves kids though.

Her name is Beignet (new orleans donut thing pronounced Ben yey)

LOL, Beignet does the same thing when we are eating and she wants some...

Update on her, she is progressing through everything extremely fast. She is smart as a whip and doesn't get faked out by our bullshit. Still not interested in toys or balls. Couldn't give a shit about them. Like rawhide. LOVES to run. I got her walking on a leash awesome around the neighborhood and we are jumping hurdles in the backyard. Think I am definitely going to try an agility class with her. She would be awesome at flyball, but she doesn't give a fuck about tennis balls, so that would be a pain in the ass to deal with... Maybe later...

Here's a few pics of her with her namesake/dogfort/walking
