Uma and I just put a down payment on first pick of a new Cane Corso. Will be a blue (actually gray), blue eye, male. We saw mom and dad dogs last weekend. Dad was about 155lbs and stands about 6' tall. Can we say BIG dog?!
I even got to use a attack sleeve with him... talk about POWER!! OMG.
Pups to arrive June 2nd. Go home with us at 6 weeks and will already be 25lbs.
Here's dad

But we aren't going to crop the ears and going for the blue over the black.
Here's a few shots of the last litter

Wifey and I are now getting very excited now that we have a deposit down and contract in. I am told a male at 150# will eat a 50# bag of food about every 2.5 weeks. And of coarse the shit will be insane... I'm thinking I might be able to shit in the back yard and it will blend in! YIKES!!! With these dogs in particular, they actually live 10-12 years.. about the same as your lab or retriever. Very light shedding, no drooling, and very much pack dogs. But as long as we socialize the dog as a puppy he should be fine with strangers as long as he don't pick up on negative vibes by us the owners. The dad dog was crazy on the attack sleeve I was wearing... bruised my arm (and I don't bruise, last time was a high side mc accident).
They are a Italian Mastiff breed. A new breed to AKC. Till just recently (the last few months) they were only papered thru a special Cane Corso association. I will get papers for that. It has great bloodlines by Denis Reed.
Should make a heck of a sight with 130# Uma jogging with this dog once he's all grown up...
Will keep this updated as soon as the pups get here...

Awesome looking dog.. A little bit big for my tastes, but still a very nice dog. I'm thinking about getting either an English Bull Dog or a Boxer. It's been almost a year since we lost out Yellow Lab....

Yeah we wanted something big and something different. Something that people just have to ask "what is that?". And as Nee said, the pups are so incrediablely cute.
And the pick of dad does NOT do his size justice. He is the biggest dog I've ever saw. Not just tall like a great dane, but very atheletic and solid.
Originally we were looking at dobermans but found these and Uma did TONS TONS TONS of research on like every dog against these. But once we met a couple they are just awesome. Live longer than others their size and very trainable. All of the ones we met would listen to one word commands. This one guy had one in his SUV and with one word it would bark like he was going to kill you, then one more word... calm.
And yeah Nee, the ears don't look as good cropped. Not like a doberman where they look better cropped. This one with its big cheeks looks better with the ears down. The tail will come docked as well as the dew claw removed.

I've raised Pit Bulls and Rottweillers but never been around this breed and have only recently read a little about them. Very interseting. :dthumb:
Heck of a breed and a big responsibility for sure. Post up plenty of pics. :rockout:

z06... its a newer bread as I said it is just in the past few months that AKC even recognized it. Which in reality is probably better because it really has a lack of problems and a great tempermant.

Beautiful dog. I've seen other Mastiffs. They make my 10-year-old Akita look small. Mine has to be on a close leash outside as he is very aggressive with other dogs. Also, extremely loyal. Calm as can be unless someone gets too close to me.

Smaller litter this time... only 5 pups. So breeder expects them to grow fast being they won't have to fighter over mom milk. And 2 of them are the blue (actually silver) males. So that is good, we can figure out which one fits us best.
Will have some pics Sat and better pics Tuesday after they get their tails and dew claws done.

Congrats on a real (large) dog Gasman. They seem to run the same price range as our Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.
Here's some advice from a big dog owner. First, keep his food and water bowls at a comfortable height for him. Excessive reach *may* lead to stomach problems.
If you suspect he has stomach problems, feed him live culture yogurt. That straightened out Mochi's problems. He gets 5 tablespoons of yogurt, three times a day. He was literally on the "Activa Challenge" :dthumb:
Another possible problem ( which we had ) was lack of specific breed knowledge at the vets. Be prepared to do a lot of research if his health is anything but perfect.
Since you are not cropping his ears, they MUST be kept clean. We wash Mochi's ears about every week to every other week. When we got him ( at 5 months ), he had an ear mite problem that went undiagnosed for many months. He now hates to have his ears cleaned. Get your puppy used to it so it's not a problem. We also use Revolution for heartworm and a tick collar since it controls ear mites and the other popular one doesn't ( I forget the name)
Since he's going to be as strong as our dog, I would suggest a "gentle leader" . It attaches around the neck and around the snout. The leash attaches under the snout and takes the pull away. Without it, Mochi can pull me around . I'm 6'- and 210 lbs. With it on, my 130 lb wife has full control over the dog. ( she does without it too, but if he wants to see something , he's as strong as an ox. GSMD are also work dogs)
I would suggest giving the dog the best food you can get. Not only is it better for him, it will have less filler and therefore fewer "landmines" in the yard :dthumb:
I've heard both good and bad about corso canes. The only bad is from irresponsible owners who didn't properly train their dogs. Make sure he's brought up with other dogs so his social skills are good.
GSMD were used as war dogs in the middle ages so they can be vicious but can also be a very social dog if raised properly. They are also fairly new to the US. Here's picture of Mochi playing with our friends Boston Terrier. he also has the gentle leader on but it's hard to see.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/JRD77VET/vacation/DCP_2841A.jpg
Mochi's only about 125 lbs in the picture. he's filled out and goes about 155 lbs now.
Once again, congrats on your puppy

OK... I have heard of the ear mites thing and will have to say something to the wife about it. We had to clean out our last dogs ears so its no big surprise.
I have also saw things on the little tables for the dogs for their dishes. I bet it would also hep keep the cats out of the dog food.
Our breeder has very specific directions on what to do and not to do with your puppy. Even down to what food, and no long walks or ANY jogging for a year (to help with future hip problems). Around the block is plenty for a pup.
We already been buying things for the dog. The gentle lead or they have some other name for it too... but anyway, that was suggested by th breeder and we already have one that is adjustable. Also, got a kennel wall for the SUV, and have lined up a few smaller kennels for the pup that we are going to borrow from a friend. And will buy a large one for him later when he grows.
Well we have 2 cats, and birds so social skills for the dog are going to top priority. My mother in law around the corner has a 7# Chihuahua and my mom has a 12# shitzu so we will be having play dates with them. Funny thing is the pup at 6 weeks will way 3-4 times the chihuahua. Should be funny to watch for sure! Will also be taking regular runs to pet's stores, vet, and probably the park. Socialize him is the idea both with people and other pets/dogs.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/GoingHome005.jpg
He's everything we knew he would be. Perfect coloring, great temperment, and very playfull. He is typicall puppy where as he falls over, jumps, cries, and bites everything. Oh and the puppy breath... its been a while sense we smelled puppy breath but it comes rushing back to you.
The car ride.... hmmm... what can we say... well it was loud. He was doing fine till we put him in the kennel and closed the door. Then the whining and moaning started. It was sad and funny at the same time.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/GoingHome008.jpg

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/GoingHome010.jpg
Then the potty training starts. Christine has been taking him out ALOT. Everytime he wakes up from a puppy nap, and every 2 hours.
Of coarse he follows us around like crazy, tripping over himself and us. He chews on anything we'll let him and loves his rope toy the most.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/GoingHome013.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/GoingHome015.jpg

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/GoingHome023.jpg
Later we had to do the crate bedtime. That went over like a fart in church. He was not happy about that. He whined, cried, barked, and yelped. Had to tell him to be quiet and lay down. But he still would persist. I don't think Christine got alot of sleep last night.
We were told by the breeder to limit his exposure to people, dogs, and public places for a while till he can get all his shots. Parvo is really bad right now and has be watched for very carefully. Its highly contagous and can be passed on by even humans. So now we have to figure out how to balance germ-a-phobe vs some normalcy.
And one of his favorite places is under us, when we are on the couch... laying on the floor.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/GoingHome024.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/GoingHome025.jpg
Then today he had a vet appt. His new vet is GREAT! And now he already has his first 2 rounds of shots. So he's on his way. Clean bill of health from the Doc.
Further, he's getting better with his crate and seperation crying. Had to put a fleece blanket in the crate sunday night so he would have the warm and softness that he's use to when he was laying with his siblings. Plus put a small mechanical travel clock on the crate at night. He did well with that. Still has to go out every 2 hrs but the crying was the worse part.
of coarse now I'm on the laptop in the living room. And if he's not trying to eat the power cord, he's biting my thigh, or falling asleep on my lap or between my legs. He's been sleeping like crazy today due to his shots the vet gave him.
But anyway... will continue to update ya'll as things go on.

absolutely adorable!! His eyes are so incredible.
As for the parvo thing, speaking fom experience...as long as you keep him away from outside puppies until he has a good immune system and everyone who handles him washes first just in case you should be good to go. Think of it like a hospital type thing, wash first or sanitize, THEN puppy priviledges. After he reaches 6 months old he should be safe from the disease but his shots will go a long way towards helping out as well.
Kinda like keeping a real baby.
Parvo is a terrible horrible disease, and believe me, if you have a pup get it, you will never forget the smell alone. Getting rid of the germs is a nightmare in itself, it requires bleaching and sanitizing literally EVERYTHING the pup has touched or come in contact with, up to and including yards, fences, walls, baseboards, etc etc...
cant wait to see this lil guy grow!

Also, tonight we took him over to my mother in laws to visit her Chihuahua. Brinks was great. The other dog, Rico, not so much. And my MIL just kept saying "good Rico" even though he was growling and barking and obviously wasn't being good. She thinks if she says that it will calm the dog and make it go away... but really it is all wrong. I don't care, Brinks behaved PERFECTLY. Didn't give two shits about the little dog. It was funny to see how big he looks to Rico (7lbs). But I forgot my camera. Next time.

Yeah the little puppy biting and crate training are the worse part.
We picked up a few biting things the other day at his first trip to the pet store. We took him to petsmart. Put him in the cart and wouldn't let him out, so he didn't pick anything "icky" up. Got him a rubber stick for chewing, and a puppy kong especially for puppy chewing. He likes the stick so much we are holding on to the kong till later. But it comes with little biskets to go inside.
As far as the pics... no biggie... its nothing compared to all my bike pics. Plus it would have to crash my laptop, desktop, and the wife's new work laptop. I think we're good.

Yesterday we introduced Brinks to the dyson and the roomba. It went ok. He was scared of both, but no big deal for him being a puppy and only 7 weeks old. Here's a few pics of him and the roomba.

Boozer looks like he could have a touch of blue healer in him...
We had a few different australian shepards back home at the farm.
All of them were self taught on both hearding cattle and playing fetch.
They would never back down from either one!
One dog (max) would even still grab the frisbee out of the air after losing the sight in one eye and hearing in one ear. Spectacular dog, best I ever owned.
IMO the only sight better than watching a good hunting dog work a field is watching a good cattle dog heard cattle without being fed commands constantly.
sorry for the jack... very cute pup Gas, love the baby blues.

Its cool Cutty... the jack is good and on topic for this page. They are great dogs. They can even hold treats and toys on their head for mins and mins till their owner says "Get it" then they flop it up and catch it in air. Simply awesome dogs. I don't think Brinks will be that awesome for fetch or tricks which is fine. Not what we want him to be. We just want him to be a good, well mannered, defending dog.
Oh and nice sig quote Cutty!
Sunday evening we took Brinks out for his first walk. Just around the block (2 blocks as there and back). The first block as we walk away from the house I had to pretty much drag him. He was choking and such (no choke chain just a collar) and eventually puked a bit. Still no help. Puked again at the farthest from the house. Was getting worried he wasn't going to co-operate. Then after the 2nd puke he was good. It was like he got himself so nerved up that he gave himself an upset stomach. Then once he got rid of it, he started walking like a champ. He walked right between me and the wife and kept pace. Never tried to lead, had no pull on the leash and the leash was slacked between me and him. Perfect.
Monday evening, he started out a bit the same. But now he would walk fine, get distracted and want to stop either due to distraction or pure lazy. Just pulled him thru it. He made the 2 block lap and did ok. Never tried to lead which is good, cause he knows he's not the pack leader.
Walking is VERY important to a dog. When he walks next to you and not in front of you, he knows you are the leader. Further, the exercise and out of the house movement just has to be done to keep them "right". So just like everything else, we are getting a good headstart. Luckily, the weather has been garbage lately so I haven't miss much riding, but I can already tell the puppy is going to screw with it some.

Yeah I should add, he is outgrowing his crate and we bought him his 2nd and last kennel. Its about the size of a twin bed, wife and I can sit down inside it with plenty of room to spare...
But with this, the crate in the car don't work anymore... so I have equipped the SS with flooring, cage/wall, and toys...
Will get pics of that stuff this week...

WOW that sounds like a heck of a road trip.
I said I would get pics of the crate and such... here ya go.
His crate/kennel. It measures 54"L x 37"W x 45"T
It would normally cost $180+. I got it on clearance for $76. Then I ordered the divider for it from a website for $40 shipped. So instead of like $240 I got about $120 or 50% into it. And it should last him forever.
The crate inside is what he has been up till now.

Awesome looking dog.. A little bit big for my tastes, but still a very nice dog. I'm thinking about getting either an English Bull Dog or a Boxer. It's been almost a year since we lost out Yellow Lab....
Please dont get a boxer... My old roomate and a former neighbor had one.
They are dumb as rocks and even at 6yrs old this dog wouldnt even sit upon command.
Given his owner was a total loser but everyone I have seen are such dummies its not funny.
My doberman is a very good dog and loves me to no end!
I didnt crop his ears either. Good way to go. Who need to put a dog thru that if not only for your own ego. "They look so much Tougher with the ears done!" ya right. hold still let me cut your ears off! Then you will look real tough...

We have noticed that with him, he's very head strong and when he wants to chew on said item there isn't much debate in his mind. But we get thru it. Spoke to the breeder today on his cert papers and he said to try "bitter apple" or "stay off".

Overall they did well, especially Brinks. Harley and him played alot, being they are only 3 weeks apart they were puppy playing alot. Ace would always try to get in on the action and sometimes take advantage of Brinks on the ground playing to attempt to hump Brinks. But Brinks doesn't like that homo shit and let loose a fearce growling and went after the pitbull. I was a proud daddy.

Of coarse he eats plants and such that he shouldn't and that of coarse gives him an upset stomach as we expierenced tonight. Just like a kid, leave him alone for one minute, and find him chewing on something he shouldn't.
Also got a pic of him in the back of the SS, now that he found out he can stand up and see around the vechicle.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/img1220051956271.jpg
He also, has found out that barking at things around the house and car is a good duty. He just needs to work on his depth perception, cause 5 houses down is too far.
He does do really really well with our niece
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/img1221260419370.jpg
But in the near future and probably part of the next update, we will be traveling up north with him and also attending the fire fighter memorial while up there. So we'll see how he does in his mobil kennel for 5+ hrs. Then he has his 4th and final puppy vet visit later this month.

Took him to the vet for "just in case" due to his upset tummy... nothing wrong with him... just got some bland diet orders and anti-dierreha pills... 45# on the ole scale!!
I think he just ate something from the yard he wasn't suppose to. BUt his poop is getting better... take a couple days to get it out of him and he'll be fine...
Goes back next week for his final puppy shots...

Well the wife, brinks, and me went up north (http://www.twowheelfix.com/showthread.php?p=73069#post73069)... got some action shots of the man brinks...
Going up north on Friday night ends up being a 5.5hr haul... brinks was a champ. Did great in the back of the SS and slept most of the way...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/img1222200723467.jpg
Saturday, we went to a festival as described in other thread (http://www.twowheelfix.com/showthread.php?p=73069#post73069), and that was 1.5hr each way, and 4hrs at the festival. Where he was the popular guy. We were stopped about every 25' asking about the dog and for every person doing that there was 3 more that looked, pointed, or talked about him as we walked by.
Here's a shot of him at an apt dropping off our step sister (she's 3yr old) who went with us.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/UpNorth004a.jpg
He pretty much slept

Sunday we went to Leelanau penninsula (most western part of the lower penninsula of michigan) and got some pics of us against lake michigan as a back drop.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Brinks/UpNorth022.jpg
Even though my father in laws place is about the same distance north, we have to run south then north again to get there, going thru Traverse city. Well, point being, he spent about 6hrs in the SS again...
Monday, was hang out at home day, before we hit the road to head to our home... we did some shooting as shown in my other thread, and the dog took it well... then wifey put him by the back door so he could relax in the shade and eat...

No shit Ebbs.
He had his final puppy shot vet appt...
Smacked down the scale at 53#. That is 8# in 8 days if you do the math just in the last week. And consider the weekend he had where he didn't eat nearly as much as normal.
Problem being though that he's now nearly a 60# puppy, meaning at times he's a 60# asshole. The vet got see him in this rare form yesterday, due to many factors fueling his fire. We got thru it and also was able to speak to their trainer who gave us a few tips. We will work on those in the future.
I'm sorry but I only got one pic yesterday of Brinks and the Doc. We didn't have the normal tech Natalie either.

Wow he is huge!
I think the Cane Corso looks much meaner with the ears trimmed, however I am sure that having the ears open like that leave them easily susceptible to infection which could be a problem.
When I got my JRT as a pup, he had everything trimmed and docked before he was sent to me. He ears now droop, so I assume they were pointy to being with. I still don't get the point of removing the dew claws and the tail.

When their ears are floppy(uncut) they are more prone to infections and hematoma's.
Dew claws are removed because they serve no purpose and if they were to ever catch on anything, the pain is sever. It's better to remove them as a new born.
Tails were docked to prevent the tails form getting bitten or pulled on when they were herding bulls or other animals. It is done in a humane way so that they do not feel it at all. They tie a sting or place a clamp around the tail before the puppies are 3 days old. Eventually the tail falls off. Remember the puppy doesn't even have his eyes open at that point and are completely unaware of it happening. It continues to be done today because that is considered to be the breed standard and dogs are penalized heavily at dog shows for having their tails in tact. Ear cropping is now optional on many breeds.

Remember the puppy doesn't even have his eyes open at that point and are completely unaware of it happening. It continues to be done today because that is considered to be the breed standard and dogs are penalized heavily at dog shows for having their tails in tact. Ear cropping is now optional on many breeds.
Makes sense, I sort of figured the opposite could be true on the ears. Thanks for the explanation.

Old man Rider is correct. My Lab has big old floppy ears. He got infections and shit. They still have to be cleaned very frequently.
Gas...dog looks great man. He's a beast. I wish I could take my dog to work. He's just too damn crazy to take with me.

Rider got most of it down.
The ears don't have to be cropped. Its acceptable either way. The dew claws and tail HAVE to be docked and as Rider said, its done when they are real young (usually within the first 3 days, I typed this info in the begining of the thread)
Ebbs... yeah no more blue eyes, its like babies. Besides blue eyes as a full grown is a breed disqualification.
And I'll tell the wife that you, Dova, like the read hair, that she no longer has... And I love the puppy with full size dog pic... that is AWESOME!
Marko... yeah its cool taking him to work... I don't even take a leash... have the shock collar to keep him close (he don't use it much anymore... just for off leash for the just in case).

I was thinking about picking one up for my jack russell to use for off leash training and eventually just to keep around for situations when I would want to let him lose.

Use one for Manny. They work...usually...but if he wants to run off he's still gonna do it. He knows eventually the shocking will stop and keeps running.

That is a beautiful dog Gas Man! Makes me miss the big breeds, we had Great Danes all the time I was growing up.
When their ears are floppy(uncut) they are more prone to infections and hematoma's.
Dew claws are removed because they serve no purpose and if they were to ever catch on anything, the pain is sever. It's better to remove them as a new born.

We were looking at Dobermans... and he would have got his ears cropped... but we just don't think Brinks would look as good with the ears cropped. We think the big ears match his big cheaks

I hear ya, the last male Great Dane my folks had was 36 inches at the shoulder and 165 lbs. He would eat 50 lbs of dry food in under 2 weeks and all the table scraps. My mom would have to boil a chicken now and then for him when there weren't enough scraps to add to his food. That's the only problem with the big dogs, its like feeding a teen age boy :D

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT! I would never recommend a shock collar....
start small, in the back yard get him to walk around with you off leash, you want to hold a toy at your at your left shoulder with your right hand while telling him to heel or whatever command you want for him to walk at your side(make sure he see's the toy and he wants it). Start walking around with him once he starts walking with you for a few steps he receives the positive reinforcement, then you start pushing it out longer... but always play in the end. If you can do this about 5-10 times a day for only 5-10 mins a time he will pick it up in no time. Eventually you will have to hide the toy and use the command then surprise him with play time. You will be shocked at how quickly he will pick it up and he will WANT to do it which is most important.
Eventually you will want to throw in distractions, then when he is still doing good you can start taking him to public places and trying it.
Dog in general want to please the alpha, and will usually do what it takes to make him/her happy especially if they get something out of it.

The problem is that the powerfull breeds will try to fight for the alpha dog position. And I know that with mine, no physicall means will get is attention when he's being "ballsy" better than a little zap

I suppose Rotts, Pitt Bulls, Boxers, Dobermans, German Shepard, S.A. Boerboels, AM Staffs and a little with the Cane Corso breed are not powerful breeds?
Here is a picture of one of the dogs having a bit of fun. This was taken the first time Bane was taken into training... Now this is not Bane but one of the many dogs we worked with that day. There were NO shock collars. These dogs work because they enjoy it, not because they are forced to.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2389/2457586059_5264439f3e.jpg?v=0
I currently have a 145lbs rottie, and a 15lbs dachshund both intact males and I can guarantee that there is not pushing between the two. They know I am the alpha and I will not tolerate any aggression between the two of them.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2161/2129489037_367afa5905.jpg?v=0
Power has nothing to do with the breed fighting for the Alpha position. This is just the way dogs work, if a dog sense's that he might be able to force out the alpha and replace him the dog will. Same as when the Alpha becomes sick the entire pack will turn on him and kill him only to better the pack.
The dog should not get "ballsy" that is the part of the owner to keep the animal in check. The animal should know who is the alpha but a shock collar does not prove to the animal who is in charge. But is sure is a good way to ruin a dog if not used properly...

Well say what you want. You CAN NOT train a powerfull breed dog the same way you do a lab or retriever. Lab's and retrievers DO NOT act the same or as challenging to anybody or any other dog.
I used the shock collar at the house to control him better when he gets out of line. Sure he would be better behaved if I ran him out more, but working 60+ hrs a week doesn't offer much free time for such. You will rarely ever have problems with tired dogs. Further walking with the dog aids in the alpha roles. But as i said, I don't always have that time for doing this everyday. He gets walked and other forums of interataction.
But I ran the collar for about a month, maybe 6 weeks. And now he rarely ever needs it. It was a tool that I used, nothing more different than a kennel. People use kennels for all sorts of reasons whether it be potty training or punishment. The dogs don't always like it but people do it anyway. That is not to say that we all will agree with each other on training.
I personally don't agree with sleeve training. I believe it breeds aggressive behavior in the dogs, especially the powerfull breeds. Police K9 dogs do this but they receive round the clock training far beyond what most normal owners would give. They have to be vicous on command to a criminal but soft/gental enough to let 1st graders maul them at school. But again, these dogs aren't the norm nor their training.
My dogs father and siblings were sleeve trained. I did some time with his father at the breeders house. It was an amazing thing, however, that dog hated me all the time, wanted to eat me all the time. I believe its the contridiction from soft vs sleeve agressive that causes some dogs to "snap" if in the wrong position.
Perhaps I'm completely wrong, perhaps not. Perhaps the 3 trainers I have consulted with are complete morons, perhaps not. Some are fine with shock collars and others are against it. Some believe Ceasar Milan is too hard on dogs, some don't. All I know is that fora 5.5 month old puppy my dog listens to me and is very well behaved. At the end of the day something I have done or not done has worked.
If my dog gets out of line or does something wrong I tell him so, one way or the other. Shcok collar, he still understands, I can tell by his reactions to the shock and to me.
Which by the way, powerfull breeds doesn't only mean their size, it also has to do with their mentality.
And at the end of today... I didn't create this thread to debate training, just share the good times Brinks and the family & friends are having.
Also, that is one great looking Rot I have always loved Rots. They are such a big muscle bound dog that are usually giant teddy bears.

Well say what you want. You CAN NOT train a powerfull breed dog the same way you do a lab or retriever. Lab's and retrievers DO NOT act the same or as challenging to anybody or any other dog.
Actually yes you do. You can train a lab with just about the same techniques as you would any other dog.
So you wanted a dog to just hang around with little to no stimulus? You don't have to run him, just going out to practice obedience will work. 10-15 min sessions.
But I ran the collar for about a month, maybe 6 weeks. And now he rarely ever needs it. It was a tool that I used, nothing more different than a kennel. People use kennels for all sorts of reasons whether it be potty training or punishment. The dogs don't always like it but people do it anyway. No a kennel is a dogs home, thats where he goes to step away it should not be used as punishment, totally different than a shock collar.
If you are referring to the picture of sleeve training it is completely different than what the police receive as training for their animals. The picture above is bite work for the sport of Schutzhund, along with tracking, and obedience. If done properly the dog does not associate the sleeve with the person, and after the work is done the handler, trainer and dog can all be friends. The dog does not do it out of aggression, he does it because it is a game. I have worked for a shot time with a gentleman that has a S.A. Boerboel that does schutzhund and I believe is now titled S.c.h. I and working on II that is also a therapy dog that goes into hospitals to help uplift the cancer patients. There is ZERO aggression because it is not aggression that you see. When you watch a dog train do you see his tail wagging, or do you see the hair on his back standing up?
My dogs father and siblings were sleeve trained. I did some time with his father at the breeders house. It was an amazing thing, however, that dog hated me all the time, wanted to eat me all the time. I believe its the contridiction from soft vs sleeve agressive that causes some dogs to "snap" if in the wrong position.
Sleeve trained? As in Schutzhund, or Protection?
By doing time were you on the sleeve? The dog has no hatred for the trainer, you are just wearing something he wants and he has been trained to get it.
I am not sure I understand what you mean "soft vs sleeve aggressive"? Also it depends on what you mean by "snap"? Are you talking about going after the trainer or handler outside of the training?
Perhaps I'm completely wrong, perhaps not. Perhaps the 3 trainers I have consulted with are complete morons, perhaps not. Some are fine with shock collars and others are against it. Some believe Ceasar Milan is too hard on dogs, some don't. All I know is that fora 5.5 month old puppy my dog listens to me and is very well behaved. At the end of the day something I have done or not done has worked.
There are quite a few trainers who claim to be such, but very few are actually worthwhile enough to train a dog. The dog might listen to you out of fear, not because he/she wants to do your bidding. It makes further training much more difficult having to force the animal to do something rather than make it want to do something.
If my dog gets out of line or does something wrong I tell him so, one way or the other. Shcok collar, he still understands, I can tell by his reactions to the shock and to me.
So the dog now associates what you say to a shock on the neck... I do not really see this as a good thing.
Which by the way, powerfull breeds doesn't only mean their size, it also has to do with their mentality.
So if you combine size and a semi intelligent dog you have a powerful breed?
I am guessing you do not think the dogs I listed are powerful? I do conceed the doberman is not quite on par as far as brains go... Generally they have two cells that fight each other.
And at the end of today... I didn't create this thread to debate training, just share the good times Brinks and the family & friends are having.
Fair enough...
Also, that is one great looking Rot I have always loved Rots. They are such a big muscle bound dog that are usually giant teddy bears.
That rott is a complete ham... I never did any training with him, only obedience, my last two were titled... and it was just a terrible loss when they died. Lots of time and effort spent between the dogs and I..

My dog had two blue eyes at birth. Around one year her right eye changed to brown from top to bottom. Her left eye followed a few months later..... EXCEPT, it stopped changing almost perfectly half way down the eye. So now she has one completly brown eye and one half brown half white eye. I guess instead of changing the bottom pigment just dissapeared. You dont really notice it because she has long bangs covering her eyes. But when she gets cut... its funny because from across the room, she always looks like she is looking up!

I've trained my APBT with positive reinforcement. Any of the CF'ers who have met him in person can testify that he is a great dog.
Shock collars are not my thing. different schools of thought.
Oh and my APBT is also shutzhund training now. He's a natural. and if a person has a well rounded dog, etc, it does not make them aggressive.

Well his bowls on the floor needed to come up. I looked ALL OVER the internet and shops... couldn't find one tall enough, that stores a good amount of food, and had big dishes. So I shopped around a bit till I found the perfect size "rubber maid" style container. Cut out the circles in the lid, cut up an old foam style floor mat to not only give it some style but also act as a gasket for the water dish. The manufactued versions usually have a double bowl on the water side.

Well, last week he went in to the vets for his nuetering. We kinda knew we would, but we were waiting. But after suggestion from friends and his trainer we went ahead and scheduled him. In the words of the trainer, "Why not just do it and help out us with his training?" So he went with special treatment and no expense was spared for his care. He came home with the e-collar (cone) to make sure he didn't get at his stitches. Looks funny too, he was also all doped up as you can see from the face shot.

Your dog is ADOREABLE!!! I LOVE that you didn't crop his ears. While some may say it helps prevent infection, this is a dog we're talking about. What did animals do before we made them into pets and started altering their bodies to our whims?
On that same train of thought, I think a lot of people now a days are too "soft" with their care of their animals. Kind of like with their kids. I don't advocate beating them by any means, but, I also don't think you have to spend more on dog food than you do people food. Dogs used to live for years on table scraps, (not that I would feed my dog only table scraps as it teaches them bad habits usually) and GASP, bones, and survived. Just like I survived riding my bicycle without a helmet and had not one head injury!

I love those pictures. I instantly see my dog in him. same exact behavior, just curl up whereever you're happy and thats that.
Good luck with the adoption, should be a great friend for Brinks.
