Supposedly, it makes the Nexus One run 450% faster, has Flash support, supports tethering and mobile hotspot, allows you to download apps to the sd card, etc...:rockwoot: Of course it's available for the N1 first. I may wait until the update to possibly update to the HTC Evo 4g. I really want that HUGE screen but if they can get the N1 to run better, I may save my money.:idk:

That's frozen yogurt, it's not due out til the 2nd half of the year and it will be available for all 2010 released android phones including the EVO and the Incredible.

I wouldn't follow the washington post's comments about it.

To be honest, we don't even get 3g here!!! I don't care about that, I really only care about the large screen and some of the other internal features. Of course, with the update, several of the features that are available on the EVO will be available on the Nexus One so...:idk:

Have you messed with an Android HTC phone? I suggest you go play with an incredible in a Verizon store if you can find one. HTC Sense adds a lot to the Android OS. The Nexus One will never have HTC Sense. I say wait out for the EVO and get it.

The EVO and the Nexus One will both have Android 2.1. They won't be really any different until the 2.2 update and they still will both get 2.2. The difference will be the HTC Sense stuff.

I don't know but I'm still betting that the N1 gets the update first. There are tons of rumors going around. If I wanted to become a developer, I could download it now... It wouldn't surprise me if I get the update within the next week or so. We got the 2.1 update weeks before anyone else.

Ah but not everyone is in love with HTC Sense.... remember, I just sent a HD2 back. I wasn't super happy with Sense, I understand that was on WinMo but still.... We'll see, trust me 2.2 will show up on N1 before anyone else, which will give me a chance to try it out. As pointed out, I don't get 3g much less 4g so that doesn't really impress me. All of the features will be the same between the phones minus the 8M camera, 1.3M raccoon shot camera and the huge screen. The main reason I may change is that T-Mobile coverage isn't very good here, Sprint is only slightly better...

No what he's saying is that all of the "new gen" Android phones are using the same processor and have the same capabilities. What sets the EVO apart is that it has more ram BUT since there isn't any frickin' 4g coverage, it's kinda worthless. Which also kinda negates the tethering and hot spot features as well...The big features on the Incredible and the EVO for me revolve around the camera and the video capabilities... They are both 8M cameras and the EVO will record in 720p, I believe a first for a phone, and play that video directly to your HDTV via a HDMI cord. Every other "feature" will be available on the N1 when the update comes out.

No most android phones have seen complaints about battery life. It has alot to do with the fact that it is constantly searching for an update from the internet. There are ways to offset this though. I started using 2 programs juice defender (which only searches for internet updates every 3 minutes). I also use task killer which shuts off any programs I'm not currently using. I went from having less than 50% batter life at the end of the bussiness day to having 80% each day with normal use.

Interesting battery life issues.

I really want to get away from this iPhone and I like Android a lot. But, here I sit with a plain old 3G that easily runs all day long playing music and whatnot and has plenty of battery left at the end of the day. If I do some seriously heavy emailing or run the navigation app without having it plugged in, the battery drains pretty quickly. But, for 90% of my daily use, I have more than enough battery to get through the day. I guess the lack of multitasking has its benefits.

The only time I have to worry about my Droid dying before the day is done is when I stream video or audio over 3G, when I am in a situation where the cell signal is weak or non-existent, or if Im using some type of navigation app for an extended time..

My droid does just fine on battery life. It'll play mp3's all day (w/ screen off) and "maybe" use half the battery. The only time battery life seems short is when I have the screen turned up and I'm on the web most of the day. I've only had a couple times of almost dead battery scenerios. Hell Pandora hardly drains the battery.

The iPhone is a nice phone. Now that Android has some serious contenders going, Apple's biggest bottleneck is going to be AT&T.

Did you see that Sprint is imposing a $10 monthly fee for all EVO users? Why? Oh, just because.

When I called the Sprint sales department asking about the Evo we checked where I live to see if 4G was available. It was not. Not even close. The sales person told me that I could opt out of the $10.00 premium data charge but if I went to a 4G area I would be limited to 3G because I did not enroll in the premium data package.

Once I bought the phone and checked my plan at sprint.com lo and behold I see the premium data charge. When I purchased the phone the girl behind the counter told me she was disabling 4g so I would not see the 10 dollar charge. I called support just now and had to speak to a supervisor. The super told me that the 10 dollar premium data was because of the 1ghz Snapdragon processor. What kind of web of lies is this? The Incredible, Nexus One, HD2 and other phones have a 1ghz Snapdragon and they don't get hit with a "premium data" charge.

It's to pay for the 4G network they are building. They don't let you opt out of it.The salesman told this guy he could opt out.

The charge still showed up on his bill.

When confronting customer service (which Sprint is notorious sucking at), they said it was because of the phone's CPU, which is the same CPU as other phones that do not charge the $10 fee.

Is every 4G phone to release from this point forward going to cost you an extra $10 a month to own? No thanks.

I just got the HTC Evo last night and love it! Super easy to use and set up just takes a little getting used to the touch screen, my old phone was a Crackberry with a keyboard. Did notice today that battery is already and 1/2 and it's only 1pm so we'll see how that goes...but so far so good.

That's hilarious. Sprint customer service is crap. I had a laptop card with them, and when I called they had to transfer me 4-5 times to find someone who even knew anything about that part of their business.

Plus they put 2 accounts and 2 duplicate bills in my name instead of 1, and it took them 3 months to fix it.

Everything Ive tried for my Droid is still way behind Apples interface, I still carry my iPod Touch to play music.. Theres no easy way to create, edit, and sync playlists on your Android device. DoubleTwist did just come out with an Android app though, it lets you syncronize your phone with your iTunes playlists.

DoubleTwist did just come out with an Android app though, it lets you syncronize your phone with your iTunes playlists.I've read about some ways to sync the music with Winamp. Not having an Android phone, I haven't looked too deeply into it.

Getting rid of iTunes is one of the reasons I'm considering switching to Android. The last thing I want to do is sync it with iTunes.

Here's a quote about Winamp from another forum:

I recently started winamp when my Droid was connected and mounted* and Winamp immediately recognized that there was a "mass storage device of an unknown type" attached to the computer. Winamp then asked me if I wanted to treat the storage devices as a music player and let winamp sync it. I said yes and everything has worked perfectly so far.

My only gripe was that winamp stores everything on the root of the SD card. but it's not a big deal because it seems all the files are automatically detected by the droid anyways. It seems that's how a lot of apps work too -- kind of a "just toss their files on the root and use applications to sort through the pile" philosophy. So for whatever it's worth, at this point I dont care much that all the files on my SD card are at the root. Though I do plan to look for a way in winamp to make it a bit more tidy.

The HTC Droid Incredible on Verizon (read our review) appears to be slated for an official update to enable 802.11n Wifi -- that's the fast kind -- according to a filing Friday with the FCC. [via Wireless Goodness] Included in the filing is an updated owners manual, which clearly shows 802.11n speed as being supported, as you can see below.

We'll go out on a limb here and say this may be a precursor to an update to Android 2.2, which we know officially supports 802.11n. And, no, we have no idea when any update may be pushed out.

And speaking of updates, HTC issued a statement to BGR regarding the "issue" of browser thumbnails (you'll recall it's not really a bug) being cached on the phone's internal storage, which is not wiped by a hard reset. HTC said:

HTC has identified the root cause of the DROID Incredible not deleting web page thumbnails after a factory reset, and is creating an update which will eliminate this issue. This will be distributed through a software maintenance release that will be pushed to devices in the near future.

We're not sure if that means the internal storage (those 6 gigabytes of space not used by the operating system) will be wiped on hard reset, or if the browser thumbnails will be moved to a different partition. Regardless, HTC reminds us that you can wipe the internal storage -- as in erase everything that's on it -- by going to Settings>SD Card and Phone Storage>Format phone storage. So the sky's not falling, people. Big brother's not watching you (at least not over this), and we can all go back to complaining about when we'll get Android 2.2.

Unreal, I'm ashamed I ever had an iPhone. Though to be fair when I first contracted on it there was nothing comparable.

How long after Froyo is Gingerbread expected to come out, and are there rumors about what UI changes we might be looking at.

It seemed to me based on the videos I've seen of Froyo that there were quite a few UI changes, with the photo albums, etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilx_cpGZczM&feature=related

Here are my results. I did a restart and used task killer to kill everything but alarm & netcounter. 108mb free and wifi turned off. Android 2.1 update 1. I also task kill'd after each benchmark.

Linpack - This is a quick benchmark. I just hit it one time, no average since you can go on forever.

MFLOPS: 4.515
Time: 1.2 seconds
Norm Res: 3.36

Quadrant - Does cpu, memory, I/O, and 2d/3d benchmarks.

Score: 365

Gears: Just shows gears moving and frame rate. I watched it for 1 minute and watched for the lowest and highest number. The evo is capped at 30 fps so you're disqualified silly.

Lowest: 57
Highest: 61

NenaMark1 - OpenGL benchmark

FPS: 10.5

Google quietly kills its once-hyped Nexus One phone
By Doug Gross, CNN

(CNN) -- With the eyes of the technology world squarely on Apple's iPhone 4, Google quietly announced it will stop selling the Nexus One, its first and possibly only foray into the smartphone world.

In a two-paragraph post on its official blog, Google's Nexus One team said the next shipment of the phones will be the last.

"Once we sell these devices, the Nexus One will no longer be available online from Google," according to the post.

The announcement was made Friday, the same day that Apple CEO Steve Jobs held a news conference to announce the company's solution for reception problems with the popular iPhone 4.

Running on Google's Android operating system, the Nexus One was released in January to mostly positive reviews from the tech blogosphere. Early users compared it favorably to the iPhone and liked the ability to buy the phone, albeit for more money, without a data plan from a particular service provider.

But sales were anemic, with the phone selling only 135,000 units in roughly the same time it took the iPhone and the Droid -- Motorola's phone that runs the Android system -- to sell 1 million.

Many blamed Google's experimental try at selling the Nexus One only in its online store. The company abandoned that approach in May, offering the phone in brick-and-mortar stores for the first time.

With the announcement, Google seems satisfied to write off the Nexus One as a tool to experiment with Android's features.

Recently, the search engine giant has been pushing Android users to phones made by other manufacturers, such as the HTC Droid Incredible. May's announcement mentioned both the Incredible, for Verizon customers, and the HTC Evo 4G from Sprint as phones that have benefited from advances made on the Nexus One.

The new Droid X from Motorola has most of the Android buzz now. It was released last week to positive reviews and is selling out online and in many retail stores.

Google's blog post said that it will continue to make the Nexus One available to Android developers so they have something to use while writing apps for the mobile platform.

I can be typing in the message box on a forum and it'll just exit out of the box and on screen keyboard. What I've typed will sometimes be there but not always. If it's there and I click back in the box, the letters disappear. Slows to a crawl a lot with nothing running. Headphone jack is screwed and they even know that. Pics that you take dont always show up in the gallery. Sometimes takes hours after you take the pic for it to show up.

I guess I can try one. The droid 1 is just not built for Froyo. The whole system runs slower, apps that worked great with 2.1 now suck with 2.2 *cough task killer cough*, exiting out of an app it takes a long time for the main screen to show back up (the icons, it shows the background for a good 10 or so seconds).

Guess I need to unlock the phone and up the cpu speed.

Flash 10.1 is a fucking joke. Every video is "not optimized" for mobile and it plays every video at 5 frames a second. It constantly makes the browser app shut down. All it's good for is loading all the stupid shit icons on websites.

I like HTC a lot, but the Droid X is supposed to be really good. I think they can go up to 1.4 or 1.6ghz, it would run smooth as glass at those speeds. A friend of mine who works with Verizon and knows a lot about Android phones says it's the best they have now.
