View Full Version : OSP's Mini-Bike Mayhem

At the bar the other night... a guy I BS with sometimes in there who is a member of a local stunt team says he has his lil' stunt mini-bike out in his van and is thinking about pissing around with it in the parking lot. A few gin and tonics later, we're out there... and he's rockin' circle wheelies and stoppies and such.
Intrigued by the little machine, I ask him to take it around the parking lot. Made it about 50 feet... Turned, bike started washing out, caught, and I high-sided. It was ugly.
Laying there I was laughing at my stupidity for a second... then I tried to get up. Knee buckled and I knew something was very wrong. Knee felt like a balloon full of rocks... I dragged myself over to the curb, straightened out my leg (which hurt very much bad). Ambulance arrived and I'm in the ER within a half hour.
Sit around the ER for a little while... pain not much of a factor, until knee is moved. Go to X-ray... Knee cap shattered into 3 big pieces and doc expects there to be a bunch more that cannot be seen directly. Now I have to wait to be sent to another hospital for surgery. All in all... I sat in the ER for 13.5 hours, until being transferred. They did have me doped up every couple hours with some Dilaudid, which was nice.
Long story short, 24 hours after getting to the new hospital, I'm prepped for surgery. I remember getting the 'cocktail', then waking up in the recovery room. I don't remember getting wheeled to my room, but I woke up next to some guy who was like 10,000 years old and was a snoring machine. Four screws and a bunch of wire, I am together.
The incident happend around 1am on Thursday... I got out of the hospital around 1pm yesterday. I get to lay on my couch for like 2 weeks until my follow-up visit... and there's no guarantee I am going to be cleared to return to work at that time. Estimated recovery time... 3 months.
At least I learned a few things...
1) I'm still a dumbass
2) Fat guys have no business on mini-bikes
3) Alcohol and two wheels don't mix, regardless of how small those wheels are
4) If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough.

That sux man. Hope you recover fully and before too long. I've been layed up and on crutches for a few months in the past and it was NO fun. It wasn't my knee but my femur...ankle and foot...yep it sucked.

I got percocets... but they don't really fuck me up... the IV of dilaudid in the hospital ruined me in the hospital. Unfortunately they wouldn't let me take that home.

Unfortunately I was JUST outside the range of the bar's security cameras... Otherwise I would have tried to get it online. Dry... Wet-jerking makes me last longer most of the time... Especially when under the influence.
As far as my product of choice:
http://shop.avon.com/shop/product.aspx?src_page=product_list.aspx&level1_id=300&level2_id=303&pdept_id=333&dept_id=&pf_id=5906
Use about a little more than a quarter-sized amount it breaks down well, getting very thin and slippery... It's long lasting and cleans off easy. Best part is, I get my mom to buy it for my every Christmas... if she only knew...

Gave me a script for 90 more Percocets (which I don't need, but I took a couple anyway cause they make me feel GREAT)... Best part is... I get to return to work tomorrow! I went to 100 degrees for the past two nights... Unaided I can actually get beyond that... probably to 110 or so... from about 45 to 70 it hurts like a bitch, then it's not bad.

01-26-2009, 10:57 PM
my dad's kneed prior to the total replacement had 7 surgeries and could only bend to 90... because they'd chopped the tendens so short... after the replacement, he's back to equal to his right or about 120 or so. but he said it hurt like a bitch to use that machine

The first time they put me in it, they set it at 30 degrees... 5 hours after my surgery... I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but I won't lie... I cried. The dilaudid and percocet combination did little... I was in it for 8 hours, 6 of which were amazingly painful. The last two I was whacked out on the drugs that FINALLY started working.

How good are you able to walk on it, if any at all? Are you going to have to have PT?
They had me with full weight on it the day after my surgery... in fact, about 10 minutes after that pic was taken... Obviously with the immobilizer on it...
When I went to the doc a couple weeks ago, the told me I could ditch the immobilizer when at home, but I should use it for stairs and anytime I'm out and about (just in case)... By that point I was on a single crutch and I bought a cane immediately following the visit...
Now I'm able to hobble around without the cane and without the immobilizer... I've lost a full two inches off the leg muscles above the knee and I haven't measured my calf yet... I can stand with full weight on it, but it's wobbly... My leg is very weak and if I try to walk normal it wants to give out.
I'm not going to push it... I have almost full range of motion bending my leg at this point, but the loss of muscle is going to take a while to get back. Each day it gets a little better with me having more and more ability to lift my knee, my leg, and bend my leg at will... Here in a few weeks I'm going to start exercising it myself... The doc has no plans for any offical physical therapy...
OneSickPsycho
02-08-2009, 03:53 PM

It's the angle on day 4, but on day 5 the swelling was up... I think that had more to do with the time between me exercising it and taking the picture as with all things being equal, I noticed a reduction in swelling pretty much every day...

Looks like its healing nicely. As far as PT goes, focus on exercises that strengthen the quads. However, avoid leg extensions like the plague. They are hell on knee structure unless done 100% correctly. Best of luck. It takes a while to get back to 100%, so be patient.

Yeah, there's no way I'd be able to navigate the garage in the condition I am in... Plus my dad's trailer is in there so there's no fucking room to work on anything... I'd have to move the bike out and I don't trust myself at this point yet... Not sure if I could throw my leg over it for one and if it started to come over on me, I'd probably end up eating shit and fucking up my knee even worse...
Looks like its healing nicely. As far as PT goes, focus on exercises that strengthen the quads. However, avoid leg extensions like the plague. They are hell on knee structure unless done 100% correctly. Best of luck. It takes a while to get back to 100%, so be patient.
My plan was to do leg extensions, sans weights to start... Also thinking of getting an exercise bike... What exercises would you recommend?
what can you do that works the quad that isn't basically the same movement as leg extensions? :idk:
Squats? Step ups?

Yeah, there's no way I'd be able to navigate the garage in the condition I am in... Plus my dad's trailer is in there so there's no fucking room to work on anything... yeah very true... and the TLR isn't light from what I've heard.
I was think'n squats and stepups would be basically the same movement.. but I guess now that I think about it it's more the pulling on your knee with extensions that would be stressful on the structure

Leg extensions are ok, but have to be done just right. If you start an extension at 90 degrees (inclusive angle between the upper and lower leg), it will put a lot of undue strain on your knee (the joint is bone on bone at this point). If you start it at about 135 degrees, it won't be so bad. My ortho told me that leg extension injuries alone could keep him in business.
I would start on an elliptical, which is low stress. Use the elliptical without holding on to the handles. Using the machine in this method will help you get your muscle balance back. When you have trauma to either wheel, you unconsciously compensate with the other leg, and lose a lot of muscle balance. An exercise bike also works, but I found that it didn't work my bad leg as well as an elliptical. A bike also doesn't help the balance muscles.
After you feel good on the elliptical, seated leg presses and v-squats will help rebuild the quad and surrounding muscles. Start out light with lots of reps, then work your way up.
Oh, and don't forget to stretch. Get your range of motion back as soon as possible.
Again, good luck. It sucks being hobbled.

Very good point with the elliptical, I could definitely see that working on the muscle balance again.
And I was also going to suggest the seated leg presses since they seem to put a lot less stress on my knees when I do them compared to true squats.

No problem. I wound up joining a cheap gym for $19 per month and ruined their equipment.

Of all the leg workouts I have done that one seems to help my riding the best! And it is fun to do.

Stronger, but still likes to randomly buckle from time to time. There's no swelling anymore... that's a plus. Now you can feel where the pieces were screwed together and there's sharp edge on the inside that hurts like the dickens anytime my knee touches... and I mean TOUCHES... anything hard... like grazing the coffee table or a desk drawer. I really need to start working out specifically to focus on this leg or I'm gonna be fucked forever.:td:

 like the dickens huh... haven't heard that since my grandma passed
well good that you're able to get around now... have you ridden much with it? I've never had any hardware in me so I cant compare but I'd imagine that it'd be really painful to bump those screws and rods...

I get the same thing.
I had the muscle that goes over the kneecap rip in half, and each end rolled up like blinds. Now there is no meaty fatty tissue over the mucsle, so when I touch anything with my knee, it hurts like hell.
I also get light knee pains just before it rains when pressing the clutch in a car.

At least a month... maybe more... It's hard to predict how everything's going to heal and my muscles bounce back...
This post makes me sad. One month to the day it happened and I'm thinking another month or so... Shit. 11 months later... fucking damnit.
