I remember reading a short story, perhaps 30 years ago, regarding the idea of alien invasion. It seems that we humans somehow missed the elementary technology for interstellar flight along the way.

The aliens, bent on universal domination, landed their wooden spaceships on Earth, dropped the gang planks, and stormed out to open fire with their cannons and matchlocks against humans with recoilless rifles, M-16s. , and tanks.
