Hmmm, didn't know they were that far north! They are plentiful in the Okefenokee swamp and some south GA lakes. They are called "mudfish" down here also. They will put up one hell of a fight though, lots of fun to catch.

they are blast and will eat damn near anything, what lake did you goto? we used to have a cabin on saint clear on the canuke side

Males have the black spot their entire life, females only have it as a juvenile. Not sure what significance the spot has but a fake "eye" seems reasonable.
