Eh, no biggie. Even in this godforsaken state, I'm positive about finding a job. Even if it's some shit job or two until something else better comes along. :dhtumb: This is nothing more than a minor setback. I've been through worse.
It's just a bit daunting because I have kids.

I've already filled out three online applications today and working on another one. One of them is for a position like the one I had. I'm also making a basic resume and having a couple of friends go over it since I suck at them and haven't made on in years.
I didn't realize Monday was a holiday so Tuesday I have a few places in mind to go to, one of which is a reputable employment agency that people I know have gone through for a job. Right now I'm trying to get as many apps and resumes out there as possible while I'm in in the go-getter mode. Nothing like being told "we're not hiring" constantly to bring a person's optimism down.
Good luck on your job search!

State job? Does that mean you'll have to take a civil service exam?
I went to our state's civil service website and it's down until Monday. I'm going to see what all I can apply for there and take the exam. Typically, working for the state of LA the pay isn't the best depending upon what you're doing, but the benefits are most excellent and make up for it. I have a couple of friends and varying aquaintainces who have state jobs and do well in their fields and have some of the best benefits I've seen. :dthumb: If I can get my foot in the door at the local hospital, they'll also pay for education for some medical positions too. That would be awesome! :D

No exam that I know of. I'm a photog. I dont know what kind of test I can take to prove that... Thats why I have a demo tape. My pay now sucks. And I work weekends. And holidays. And I never see my wife. While not nearly as exciting...the state gig would be ALOT more money, 9-5 Monday through Friday and holidays off. Not to mention the state beni's.
That being said...I'd rather stay where I'm at...if I was monday through friday.

Here, from what I understand, a civil service exam of some sort is required in order to be considered for any state employment.
As much as I loved my old job, the pay wasn't exactly the best but the benefits were good. I had considered in the past applying at their competitor's because the pay was a little better, although I don't know much about their benefits. I just put in an online app (the only way you can apply for the job) so hopefully I'll hear something back from them. I mean, how many licensed operators could there be in this town trying to get the position? The old job trained you. This one wants someone who's already been trained and licensed. Hell, I had been in the security industry for a few years before I knew about the trainining and licesning. Not to mention that there was actually a monitoring center or two in town. Imagine my surprise!

The problem here is I really like my job. But the industry is changing. Everything is changing. I've never wanted to do this forever...but I'm not ready to leave yet. But at the same time...I need to pay the bills. At the time of the lay offs...anyone who didnt lose their job took a 4% pay cut...along with no OT...I'm down almost 15% of what I made last year.

I got into this industry by accident, in a sense, and I've grown to love it. There's so much more to it that I want to learn! So if possible, I'll continue in this field. And the plus is, as long as there's thieves, fires, and mandated fire codes, there's always a possibility for a job in it. It's almost one of those "who you know" type jobs as they typically hire from the inside. It's hard for someone to start in this field, be it as an installer or an operator, without knowing someone.
That sucks about your pay cut. And it's sad to see how many people are getting laid off lately. :( Knowing that makes job hunting even more nerve wracking.

Video games increase hand eye coordination and problem solving abilities. Surgeons who play video games have greater fine motor control, making minute incisions easier and generally decreasing the amount of damage done and scar tissue created during an invasive surgical routine.

Depends on the mood. COD4 and COD World at War have been getting some decent amount of play. Every now and then I'll fire up a game of Portal or Metal Gear Solid 4 to switch it up. But honestly, I've been playing the living shit outta my Nintendo DS. Got a flash cart loaded up with a bunch of games. Between Final Fantasy 3 and 4, Chrono Trigger, and Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, there hasn't been much PS3 or Xbox360 action lately.

Besides the songs that make it on SNL that got popularity, there are some real fucking excellent stuff on the album that is musically good and still funny. Boombox (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7SwWiUxQx4) with Julian Casablancas and Dreamgirl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcC1G2KbaFU) with Norah Jones are fucking excellent songs, in spite of the goofy lyrics. And Shrooms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP11e2LJSf4)
makes me laugh my balls off every time.

Video games increase hand eye coordination and problem solving abilities. Surgeons who play video games have greater fine motor control, making minute incisions easier and generally decreasing the amount of damage done and scar tissue created during an invasive surgical routine.
That doesn't help your retardedness redflip

Depends on the mood. COD4 and COD World at War have been getting some decent amount of play. Every now and then I'll fire up a game of Portal or Metal Gear Solid 4 to switch it up. But honestly, I've been playing the living shit outta my Nintendo DS. Got a flash cart loaded up with a bunch of games. Between Final Fantasy 3 and 4, Chrono Trigger, and Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, there hasn't been much PS3 or Xbox360 action lately.
That old skool Legend of Zelda (8bit?) That was the shitz....
I've been doing a lot of Little Big Planet lately, tossed in w/ some flight and racing simulation (no, not NASCAR).
Played the Demo for MGS4.... I do enjoy a good sneaking around, but I do love to light some shit up.... You get to do that later in the game?
and the music there isn't quite my style. perfer stuff a bit faster pace (okay, srhooms was funny)

It's geared towards sneaking, but you have the option to play it how you want to. Once you get certain weapons you can go around and be a one man army with little fear. I've got an M4 with a grenade launcher, silencer and a pretty decent scope on it that'll tear through most people, and a rail gun/sniper rifle that will fuck up Geckos in one shot. Makes doing the run and gun thing a whole lot easier, but I did the first run through of the game more in line with sneaking than killing everything that moved.

I had to reschedule the appointment because my son called me sick as hell from school and I had to go get him about the same time my appointment was. :(
I have 2 definite interviews this next week as well as taking the civil service exam (the state is hiring). I also have a couple more decent leads that I have to go apply in person too. Since I've pretty much applied at all the good places via online, I'm now out for whatever I can find that will help pay the bills.

The owner said she'd give me a severance pay. I haven't seen that either. :idk: I thought everything would have came in one envelope...instead the only envelope I got was my check stub (I have/had automatic deposit). Since I haven't received anything I'm curious to know if I've actually been laid off (since she told me to come see her in 90 days) or what the deal is. I'd try to go see her but I need a code to get in the door. I imagine mine's already been taken out. If I call, I have to get around the manager first and I don't trust her to tell me much. She loves talking in circles.
It would be really nice if I could get a state job. The local charity hospital has 2 positions open for admissions. My aunt worked there years ago and got a really nice retirement from them. I have a couple of friends that work there too and the benefits are still the same. If I could get one of those positions, I'd be set! :dthumb:
The Young Padawan is at his dad's for two weeks (50/50 custody...two weeks with me...two weeks with their dad). I talked to him last night and he says he's doing a little better. When I picked him up from school, I stopped by the store for some meds for him. Hopefully whatever he's managed to get sick with isn't bad. Especially since today is his birthday. Young Padawan is 14 today. :D

That's one of the things I"m thinking w/ your situation, w/ teh severance and the word to come bak in 90 days.... I dunno, try to get in touch w/ the owner... But still, 3 mo is a long time to wait.
Good luck w/ that test though!

He's still my Young Padawan. ;) Mini-Me will be 16 this summer. :panic:
I can call her direct line but if she's not in, it'll just rollover to the manager. I think I may have owner's hubby's cell phone number somewhere...... I can prolly get someone from work to get me their home phone...I was supposed to have had it anyway for emergencies...hmmm....
I'm not waiting the 90 days and I'm really hesitant about going back to a place where I'd be afraid any day I could get fired or laid off due to office politics. I need a job where I'd feel fairly comfortable working and not having a constant fear of losing my job...again.
No job for you too? Good luck to you too!

I've never gotten a slip so don't know what you are talking about. they had a piece of paper for me to sign saying that I had been explained why I was fired. it didn't say why I was, just that it had been explained to me.
there is only a 1 week waiting period here and it starts when you file not (like MO) when you were let go.
I've sent out several resume's and gone and filled out 1 app. for a state job doing floors in a mental hospital. much less responsibility than the job I just left and damn near the same money.
funny how most jobs listed don't want you to come see them in person unless they call you. they want you to send them a resume and that's it. no physical address in the add for you to even go pester them for a job.
I have found some listings for up to $18/hr though in manufacturing which is more than I was making.

This company typically gives you a pink slip, as they call it, if they fire you. You usually get it with your last check, but I didn't it. :idk:
Yeah, I've noticed most jobs, even in the newspaper, don't give you an address to go pester...sometimes a phone number, but oftentimes they want a resume faxed or emailed or tell you to go to their website and apply online.

One evening a man was at home watching TV and eating peanuts.
He'd toss them in the air, and then catch them in his mouth. In the
middle of catching one, his wife asked him a question - and as he
turned to answer her, a peanut fell in his ear.
He tried and tried to dig it out but succeeded in only pushing
it in deeper. He called his wife for assistance, and after hours of
trying they became worried and decided to go to the hospital.
As they were ready to go out the door, their daughter came home
with her date. After being informed of the problem, their daughter's
date said he could get the peanut out..
The young man told the father to sit down, then proceeded to
shove two fingers up the father's nose and told him to blow hard.
When the father blew, the peanut flew out of his ear. The
mother and daughter jumped and yelled for joy.
The young man insisted that it was nothing.
Once he was gone, the mother turned to the father and said,
'That's so wonderful! Isn't he smart? What do you think he's going to
be when he grows older?'
The father replied, 'From the smell of his fingers, I'd say our
son-in-law.'

I had a few errands to run, but I'm putting them off until tomorrow since I had an interview close by where I'm going.
Besides, I didn't sleep worth a damn. I went to bed, tossed and turned for a couple of hours, got up for a little while, then went back to toss and turn some more. I finally got to sleep about 5am-ish. I used to work overnights so trying to get back on a real schedule has been a pain, plus I'm stressed so I'm not sleeping like I should. :(

Just picked up a massive amount of dog shit from my back yard. Gross.
I had a few errands to run, but I'm putting them off until tomorrow since I had an interview close by where I'm going.
Besides, I didn't sleep worth a damn. I went to bed, tossed and turned for a couple of hours, got up for a little while, then went back to toss and turn some more. I see, I was just messing with you anyway.
I raced a Harley today, and after some really hard riding I finally
managed to pass the guy. I was riding on one of those really, really,
twisting sections of canyon road with no straight sections to speak of
and where most of the curves have warning signs that say "15 MPH".
I knew if I was going to pass one of those monsters with those
big-cubic-inch motors, it would have to be a place like this where
handling and rider skill are more important than horsepower alone.
I saw the guy up ahead as I exited one of the turns and knew I could
catch him, but it wouldn't be easy. I concentrated on my braking and
cornering. Three corners later, I was on his fender. Catching him was
one thing; passing him would prove to be another.
Two corners later, I pulled up next to him as we sailed down the
mountain. I think he was shocked to see me next to him, as I nearly got
by him before he could recover. Next corner, same thing. I'd manage to
pull up next to him as we started to enter the corners but when we came
out he'd get on the throttle and outpower me. His horsepower was almost
too much to overcome, but this only made me more determined than ever.
My only hope was to outbrake him. I held off squeezing the lever until
the last instant. I kept my nerve while he lost his. In an instant, I
was by him. Corner after corner, I could hear the roar of his engine as
he struggled to keep up. Three more miles to go before the road
straightens out and he would pass me for good.
But now I was in the lead, and he would no longer hold me back. I
stretched out my lead and by the time we reached the bottom of the
canyon, he was more than a full corner behind. I could no longer see him
in my rear-view mirror.
Once the road did straighten out, it seemed like it took miles before he
passed me, but it was probably just a few hundred yards. I was no match
for that kind of horsepower, but it was done. In the tightest section of
road, where bravery and skill count for more than horsepower and deep
pockets, I had passed him. Though it was not easy, I had won the race to
the bottom of the canyon.
I will always remember that moment. I don't think I've ever pedaled so
hard in my life. And some of the credit must go to Schwinn, as well.
They really make a great bicycle.

a month of interviews would suck. groundhog day comes to mine without being able to have any fun. I hate interviews and now I'm sure it's going to be harder with so many people out there wanting/needing jobs.
I was told that the one job I applied for that they would start out as part time so I could figure out if I liked the job or not. hell, it's been quite a while since I've had a job that I actually liked doing that didn't affect some other part of my life that I liked as much or more (working in an MC shop does suck no mater what anyone tells you). it's a job I don't have to like it to still do the best I can.
